You still have to keep your eyes on the road. But obstructing your hands on the wheel? Thats becoming optional.
The all-new 2017 Mercedes-Benz E3 00 is available with a feature announced Drive Pilot, which should not be confused with Teslas Autopilot, even though they do pretty much the same things. Drive Pilot is actually a collecting of features enabled by cameras and radar that combine to allow the E300 to steer itself between the lines on the road, manage its speed and autonomously restraint for acts that get in front of it.
Whats that? Your automobile already does all that? Yeah, there are quite a few out there with lane-keeping assist, adaptive sail dominate and automated emergency braking plans. But, believes me, aside from perhaps the Teslas, they dont do it as well as this one including your year-old Benz.
If there are relatively clear corridor markers to prevent a camera eye on, Drive Pilot fastens the car in the middle of them. Theres no bouncing side to back like a poorly thrown bowling ball between trough bumpers, and it draws curves likely as well as you. Itll do it on the route and also in stop-and-go city transaction, where the experience is more creepy-crawly than thrilling.
Like the gazes of the path next to you? Just touched the directional and prepare to be transported into it. The vehicle checks its blind spot on its own, waits if theres anything there, and then changes trails when theres chamber. I dare you not to titter out loud the first time you try this. Or the hundredth.
You cant sit by, relax and experience the move for too long, though. Mercedes would prefer that you treat Drive Pilot as a safety net, rather than a chauffeur. Every minute or so it asks you to touch the wheel to prove you havent extended AWOL. If you dont, it turns on the hazard lights and gently brings itself to a halt to save itself … I mean you. It too checks in more frequently if the road starts get twisty, even though it can handle typical interstate-grade curves on its own just fine.
Most of the time.
Over about 200 miles of driving, there were two or three moments when the E300 I was researching started straying out of the lane and urged me to take control as its road difference prevention system notifies kicked in. I chose not to see “whats happened” if I didnt, but Im to indicate that if the car were just about to thumped anything it would use the inflatable back bolster in the seat to pushing me got a couple of inches further away from the door and the speakers to eject a noise to poise my inner ear muscles for any shattering louder ones that might follow in a crash.
So, while Drive Pilot is impressively effective, its not flawless, and youre still very much on the hook. Its likewise lacking the navigational ability to guide it from degree A to point B, changing superhighways along the way. Although the E300 can read rapidity limit mansions and change itself accordingly, the car can go only in the direction you moment it. Heeding red lights and stop signals is up to you.
The bundle Drive Pilot enters bundled in adds $11,250 to the E3 00 s $53,075 base price, but it also includes a few disconcerting indulgences that might realise the extra mantle of security worth noting. These include heated massaging fannies, a 14 -speaker Burmester audio system and a hut breeze sweetnes plan, all of which can send you off to dreamland.
Even stripped of all of these, the E300 is once again the belle of the midsize luxury sedan dance. It looks like a shriveled version of an S-Class on the outside, and all of that flagships goodness is concentrated within. The accent light-equipped interior design is spectacular, especially at night, with flowing strands and a scenery of dueling 12.3 -inch showings for the ascertains and infotainment organization. The trip consolation is so good that I cant imagine theres a reason to shell out for the optional adaptive dampers or breath outpourings, though Id like to be proven wrong. A brand-new 241 hp 2.0 -liter turbocharged machine isnt too strong, but it is smooth and effective. Id tell you its as quiet as a gondola is also possible, but theres a $1,100 Acoustic Comfort package available that substances in additional insulation and laminates the windows to mute it even more.
My only real objection is that, as has frequently been been the case with the E-Class, its rear accommodate legroom is also important to middling among its peers. But thats OK this time around, because the moves sit is the best one in the house.
Especially when youre not driving.
