All parallelling everything: what luxury dorm rooms tell us about students today

Dorm decor now resembles a competitive boast involving more inspirational mottoes, fewer dedicated study chambers and numerous, numerous pillows

Back when I was a university undergraduate in Ye Olde England, my dormitory room had an Ikea lamp, lots of pretentious notebooks and a ostentatious vintage stone party poster. There was also a mushroom proliferating from my ceiling( not on purpose ). This was pretty guideline and my peers had deviations of the same.

Fast forward to present-day America and things have changed. I present as Exhibit A, Lindy Goodson and Abby Bozeman, freshman roommates at Ole Miss. A picture of Goodson and Bozemans dormitory room recently travelled viral because, unlike dorm rooms of yore, their room is certainly, very nice. Like Shangri-La nice. Things parallel. The term plush are applicable to memory. Construe below 😛 TAGEND

Amazing, right? But not actually that unexpected. Goodson and Bozeman arent outliers; theyre representative of a more design-savvy, Instagram-image-conscious generation. People from the National Retail Federation show that spending on dormitory room decor has gone up over the last several years and some students are even expending interior design conglomerates to embellish their rooms.

Before we start tutting about it wasnt like this for my generation, a word about the current generation. The current uptake of newcomers are around 18 or 19, which means theyre at a very young resolve of the millennial generation and the oldest resolve of Gen Z or as I like to call them, Zillennials.

Zillenials have different apprehensions of the college knowledge than previous generations. Theyve been received information that college can be a premium event, and both private corporations and colleges are rowing up to serve it to them. Colleges, in general, have gone from striking study hubs to country-club like ordeals. MIT has a ball quarry; Boston University has a clambering wall; Rutgers Universitys $ 55 m Rockoff dorm features a Coldstone Creamery and a state-of-the-art gym.

Developers have also started investing billions in off-campus dorms. A recent Bloomberg analysis of 94 student house complexes across the US found that 80% had access to a wading pool, 55% lives in dimensions with on-site tanning stores, while 45% have beach volleyball courts. Precisely 38% offered dedicated study rooms.

Dorm decor, it seems, becomes a competitive boast in educational institutions in different regions of the country. And while Goodson and Bozeman may be the current dominate princess, spate of other beings are taking part. There are 68,296 #dormroom photos on Instagram, and moving through them reveals a few things about the new generation of college kids things. Heres what I learned.

Typography& ampersands

I dont know what the Helvetica is going on but typography is very hot right now and dorm rooms seem to have become a fount of fonts. Whats more, empirical Instagram evidence suggests that the ampersand is having a moment.

Inspirational terms

Most of the time these dont even seemed to be ironic. Rather “theyre saying” things like Youre not a monkey youre a unicorn in elaborated typography. You may think inspirational phrases are trite but keep calm and you can carry them off.

All according everything

Thanks to social media, dorm copulates are connecting and coordinating before they even fulfill. Students are happily choosing to abandon their individuality in the name of symmetry and the results are <a href="mailto:

Pillows are the brand-new postings

You can never be too rich or more thin or have too many pillows, apparently. Pillows have proliferated at an alarming proportion in recent years. Whats more, many of them compound the above veers: they parallel and have a motivational phrase on them.

Well ever have paris

French is also available its own language of adoration but its too the eternal expression of trying to audio sophisticated. While previous generations may have put up a framed vintage French movie poster, todays kids have a pillow with Cest La Vie on it or Paris plastered over their pillow or a wall decal of the Eiffel Tower. The takeout from this? While todays kids have graduated from dog-eared signs and Ikea lamps, theyre still desperately trying to impress each other. Plus a change.
