Back when I was a university undergraduate in Ye Olde England, my dorm room had an Ikea lamp, lots of pretentious journals and a pretentious vintage stone strap poster. There was also a mushroom flourishing from my ceiling( not on purpose ). This was pretty criterion and my peers had discrepancies of the same.
Fast forward to present-day America and things have changed. I present as Exhibit A, Lindy Goodson and Abby Bozeman, freshman roommates at Ole Miss. A picture of Goodson and Bozemans dorm room recently disappeared viral because, unlike dormitory room of yore, their room is certainly, very nice. Like Shangri-La nice. Happens parallel. Amazing, right? But not actually that peculiar. Goodson and Bozeman arent outliers; theyre representative of a more design-savvy, Instagram-image-conscious generation. Chassis from the National Retail Federation been demonstrated that spending on dorm room decoration has gone up over the last several years and some students are even expending interior design houses to decorate their rooms.
Before we start tutting about it wasnt like this for my generation, a few words about the current generation. The current uptake of newcomers are around 18 or 19, which means theyre at the youngest end of the millennial generation and the oldest dissolve of Gen Z or as I like to call them, Zillennials.
Zillenials have differing hopes of the college ordeal than previous generations. Theyve been taught that college can be a premium suffer, and both private corporations and colleges are stringing up to serve it to them. Simply 38% offered dedicated subject rooms.
Dorm decor, it seems, has become a competitive sport in educational institutions in different regions of the country. And while Goodson and Bozeman may be the present reigning queens, abundance of other parties are taking part. There are 68,296 #dormroom photos on Instagram, and scrolling through them discloses a few stuffs about the new generation of college kids happens. Heres what I learned.
I dont know what the Helvetica is going on but typography is very hot right now and dormitory room seem to have become a fount of typefaces. Whats more, empirical Instagram evidence is demonstrated that the ampersand is having a moment.
Most of the time these dont even appear to be sarcastic. Rather “theyre saying” occasions like Youre not a bird youre a unicorn in elaborate typography. You may think inspirational mottoes are trite but keep calm and you are able to carry them off.

Thanks to social media, dormitory teammates are connecting and coordinating before they even fill. Students are willfully choosing to abandon their peculiarity in the name of symmetry and the results are <a href="mailto:

You can never be too rich or very thin or have too many pillows, apparently. Pillows have proliferated at an alarming proportion in recent years. Whats more, many of them blend the above trends: they accord and have a motivational term on them.
Well ever have paris
French is also available the language of charity but its too the eternal communication of trying to phone sophisticated. While previous generations may have put up a framed antique French cinema sign, todays kids have a pillow with Cest La Vie on it or Paris plastered over their bedding or a wall decal of the Eiffel Tower. The takeout from this? While todays kids have graduated from dog-eared postings and Ikea lamps, theyre still urgently are seeking to impress each other. Plus a change.
