Back when I was a university undergraduate in Ye Olde England, my dorm room had an Ikea lamp, lots of pretentious volumes and a pretentious vintage rock strap posting. There was also a mushroom ripening from my ceiling( not on purpose ). This was pretty guideline and my peers had modifications of the same.
Fast forward to present-day America and things have changed. I present as Exhibit A, Lindy Goodson and Abby Bozeman, freshman roommates at Ole Miss. A picture of Goodson and Bozemans dorm room recently moved viral because, unlike dormitory room of yore, their room is truly, really nice. Like Shangri-La nice. Stuffs competitor. Amazing, right? But not actually that unexpected. Goodson and Bozeman arent outliers; theyre representative of a more design-savvy, Instagram-image-conscious generation. Digits from the National Retail Federation show that spending on dormitory room decoration has gone up over the last several years and some students are even using interior design houses to decorate their rooms.
Before we start tutting about it wasnt like this for my generation, a word about the current generation. The current uptake of newcomers are around 18 or 19, which means theyre at a very young demise of the millennial generation and the oldest discontinue of Gen Z or as I like to call them, Zillennials.
Zillenials have differing expectancies of the college knowledge than previous generations. Theyve been received information that college can be a premium know, and both private companies and colleges are lining up to serve it to them. Colleges, in general, have gone from stark learn centers to country-club like knows. MIT has a ball crater; Boston University has a clambering wall; Rutgers Universitys $ 55 m Rockoff dorm features a Coldstone Creamery and a state-of-the-art gym.
Developers have also started investing billions in off-campus dormitories. A recent Bloomberg analysis of 94 student housing complexes across the US found that 80% had access to a swimming bath, 55% lived in dimensions with on-site tanning salons, while 45% have beach volleyball courts. Just 38% offered dedicated investigate rooms.
Dorm decor, it seems, has become a competitive play in educational institutions across the country. And while Goodson and Bozeman may be the present reigning kings, batch of other people are taking part. Most of the time these dont even seemed to be ironic. Rather they say stuffs like Youre not a monkey youre a unicorn in elaborate typography. You may think inspirational terms are trite but keep calm and you are able to carry them off.
All pairing everything
Thanks to social media, dorm copulates are connecting and coordinating before they even assemble. Students are willfully choosing to leave their peculiarity in the name of symmetry and the findings are <a href="mailto:

Pillows are the new signs
You can never be too rich or more thin or have too many pillows, apparently. Pillows have proliferated at an alarming rate in recent years. Whats more, many of them mix the above trends: they accord and have a motivational phrase on them.
Well always have paris
French may be its own language of love but its likewise the everlasting speech of trying to racket sophisticated. While previous generations may have put up a framed vintage French film sign, todays kids have a pillow with Cest La Vie on it or Paris plastered over their bedding or a wall decal of the Eiffel Tower. The takeout from this? While todays kids have graduated from dog-eared signs and Ikea lamps, theyre still desperately are seeking to impress each other. Plus a change.
