All matching everything: what indulgence dorm rooms tell us about students today

Dorm decor now resembles a competitive sport committing more inspirational mottoes, fewer dedicated subject rooms and many, numerous pillows

Back when I was a university undergraduate in Ye Olde England, my dorm room had an Ikea lamp, lots of pretentious books and a pretentious antique stone party posting. There was also a mushroom developing from my ceiling( not on purpose ). This was pretty touchstone and my peers had differences of the same.

Fast forward to present-day America and things have changed. I present as Exhibit A, Lindy Goodson and Abby Bozeman, freshman roommates at Ole Miss. A picture of Goodson and Bozemans dorm room recently ran viral because, unlike dorm rooms of yore, their room is actually, really nice. Like Shangri-La nice. Things competition. Amazing, right? But not actually that odd. Goodson and Bozeman arent outliers; theyre representative of a more design-savvy, Instagram-image-conscious generation. Figures from the National Retail Federation been demonstrated that spending on dorm room decoration has gone up over the last several years and some students are even applying interior design houses to decorate their rooms.

Before we start tutting about it wasnt like this for my generation, a few words about the current generation. The current uptake of freshmen are around 18 or 19, which means theyre at the youngest death of the millennial generation and the oldest death of Gen Z or as I like to call them, Zillennials.

Zillenials have different possibilities of the college experience than previous generations. Theyve been received information that college can be a premium experience, and both private companies and colleges are lining up to serve it to them. Colleges, in general, have gone from stark contemplate centres to country-club like experiences. MIT has a ball crater; Boston University has a climbing wall; Rutgers Universitys $ 55 m Rockoff dorm peculiarity a Coldstone Creamery and a state-of-the-art gym.

Developers have also started investing billions in off-campus dorms. Dorm decor, it seems, has become a competitive sport in educational institutions across the country. I dont know what the Helvetica is going on but typography is very hot right now and dorm rooms seem to have become a fount of fonts. Whats more, empirical Instagram evidence suggests that the ampersand is having a moment.

Inspirational terms

Most of the time these dont even seemed to be sarcastic. Rather “theyre saying” acts like Youre not a bird youre a unicorn in elaborate typography. You may think inspirational terms are trite but keep calm and you are able to carry them off.

All coinciding everything

Thanks to social media, dormitory copulates are connecting and coordinating before they even congregate. Students are willingly choosing to leave their individuality in the name of symmetry and the findings are <a href="mailto:

Pillows are the brand-new signs

You can never be too rich or very thin or have too many pillows, apparently. Pillows have proliferated at an alarming rate in recent years. Whats more, many of them compound the above veers: they pair and have a motivational motto on them.

Well ever have paris

French may be its own language of affection but its also the everlasting conversation of an attempt to chime sophisticated. While previous generations may have put up a framed antique French film poster, todays kids have a pillow with Cest La Vie on it or Paris plastered over their quilt or a wall decal of the Eiffel Tower. The takeout from this? While todays kids have graduated from dog-eared postings and Ikea lamps, theyre still desperately trying to impress each other. Plus a change.
