Back when I was a university undergraduate in Ye Olde England, my dorm room had an Ikea lamp, lots of ostentatious books and a pretentious vintage rock circle poster. There was also a mushroom developing from my ceiling( not on purpose ). This was pretty guideline and my peers had fluctuations of the same.
Fast forward to present-day America and things have changed. I present as Exhibit A, Lindy Goodson and Abby Bozeman, freshman roommates at Ole Miss. A picture of Goodson and Bozemans dorm room recently led viral because, unlike dorm rooms of yore, their area is truly, really nice. Like Shangri-La nice. Stuffs competition. Amazing, right? But not actually that extraordinary. Goodson and Bozeman arent outliers; theyre representative of a more design-savvy, Instagram-image-conscious generation. Chassis from the National Retail Federation show that spending on dormitory room decoration has gone up over the last several years and some students are even utilizing interior design houses to embellish their rooms.
Before we start tutting about it wasnt like this for my generation, a few terms about the current generation. The current intake of freshmen are around 18 or 19, which means theyre at the youngest extremity of the millennial generation and the oldest cease of Gen Z or as I like to call them, Zillennials.
Zillenials have different expectations of the college ordeal than previous generations. Theyve been taught that college can be a premium experience, and both private companies and colleges are stringing up to serve it to them. Colleges, in general, have gone from stark subject centres to country-club like events. MIT has a ball cavity; Boston University has a clambering wall; Rutgers Universitys $ 55 m Rockoff dorm features a Coldstone Creamery and a state-of-the-art gym.
Developers have also started investing billions in off-campus dormitories. A recent Bloomberg analysis of 94 student casing complexes across the US found that 80% had access to a wading pool, 55% lived in owneds with on-site browning salons, while 45% have beach volleyball courts. Exactly 38% offered dedicated study rooms.
Dorm decor, it seems, has become a competitive boast in educational institutions throughout the country. And while Goodson and Bozeman may be the current predominate queens, spate of other beings are taking part. There are 68,296 #dormroom photos on Instagram, and scrolling through them reveals a few stuffs about the new generation of college teenagers events. Heres what I learned.
I dont know what the Helvetica is going on but typography is very hot right now and dormitory room seem to have become a fount of fonts. Whats more, empirical Instagram evidence been shown that the ampersand is having a moment.
Most of the time these dont even appear to be ironic. Rather “theyre saying” happenings like Youre not a monkey youre a unicorn in elaborate typography. You may think inspirational words are trite but keep calm and they are able to carry them off.
All pairing everything
Thanks to social media, dorm copulates are connecting and coordinating before they even convene. Students are freely choosing to leave their peculiarity in the name of symmetry and the results are <a href="mailto:

Pillows are the new signs
You can never be too rich or too thin or have too many pillows, apparently. Pillows have proliferated at an alarming charge in recent years. Whats more, many of them combine the above veers: they coincide and have a motivational phrase on them.
Well always have paris
French is a possibility its own language of desire but its also the everlasting conversation of trying to seem sophisticated. While previous generations may have put up a framed vintage French movie poster, todays children have a pillow with Cest La Vie on it or Paris plastered over their pillow or a wall decal of the Eiffel Tower. The takeout from this? While todays children have graduated from dog-eared postings and Ikea lamps, theyre still desperately trying to impress each other. Plus a change.
