Back when I was a university undergraduate in Ye Olde England, my dormitory room had an Ikea lamp, lots of ostentatious works and a ostentatious antique rock-and-roll stripe poster. There was also a mushroom flourishing from my ceiling( not on purpose ). This was pretty touchstone and my peers had alterations of the same.
Fast forward to present-day America and things have changed. I present as Exhibit A, Lindy Goodson and Abby Bozeman, freshman roommates at Ole Miss. A picture of Goodson and Bozemans dorm room recently proceeded viral because, unlike dormitory room of yore, their area is really, really nice. Like Shangri-La nice. Happens pair. Amazing, right? But not actually that rare. Goodson and Bozeman arent outliers; theyre representative of a more design-savvy, Instagram-image-conscious generation. Fleshes from the National Retail Federation show that spending on dormitory room decoration has gone up over the last several years and some students are even utilizing interior design houses to decorate their rooms.
Before we start tutting about it wasnt like this for my generation, a few terms about the present generation. The current intake of newcomers are around 18 or 19, which means theyre at a very young objective of the millennial generation and the oldest terminate of Gen Z or as I like to call them, Zillennials.
Zillenials have different expectancies of the college know-how than previous generations. Theyve been received information that college can be a premium know, and both private companies and colleges are lining up to serve it to them. Colleges, in general, have gone from stark survey hubs to country-club like ordeals. MIT has a ball crater; Boston University has a clambering wall; Rutgers Universitys $ 55 m Rockoff dorm boasts a Coldstone Creamery and a state-of-the-art gym.
Developers have also started investing billions in off-campus dorms. A recent Bloomberg analysis of 94 student casing composites across the US found that 80% had access to a swimming bath, 55% lives in properties with on-site browning salons, while 45% have beach volleyball courts. Just 38% offered dedicated contemplate rooms.
Dorm decor, it seems, has become a competitive play in educational institutions across the country. And while Goodson and Bozeman may be the current reigning monarches, abundance of other people are taking part. There are 68,296 #dormroom photos on Instagram, and moving through them reveals a few happenings about the new generation of college minors happenings. Heres what I learned.
I dont know what the Helvetica is going on but typography is very hot right now and dormitory room seem to have become a fount of typefaces. Whats more, empirical Instagram evidence been shown that the ampersand is having a moment.
Most of the time these dont even turns out to be ironic. Rather they say concepts like Youre not a pigeon youre a unicorn in elaborated typography. You may think inspirational phrases are trite but keep calm and you can carry them off.
All parallelling everything
Thanks to social media, dormitory copulates are connecting and coordinating before they even fulfill. Students are willingly choosing to leave their individualism in the name of symmetry and the results are <a href="mailto:

Pillows are the new postings
You can never be too rich or extremely thin or have too many pillows, apparently. Pillows have proliferated at an alarming charge in recent years. Whats more, many of them compound the above directions: they pair and have a motivational word on them.
Well always have paris
French is a possibility its own language of cherish but its too the eternal speech of trying to audio sophisticated. While previous generations may have put up a framed vintage French cinema posting, todays minors have a pillow with Cest La Vie on it or Paris plastered over their quilt or a wall decal of the Eiffel Tower. The takeout from this? While todays kids have graduated from dog-eared signs and Ikea lamps, theyre still desperately trying to impress each other. Plus a change.
